It was warmer yesterday than today
The truth is above all. Even above the Motherland!
Merab Mamardashvili
It so happened that at the times when the Alanian Kingdom was practically wiped out by the Mongol conquerors, a handful of people who managed to survive escaped into the mountains and gradually grew up settling in different gorges of Ossetia. One of the gorges bordered with the territory of the present-day Georgia. And this historically predetermined all the future vicissitudes in the relations between the two peoples – the Georgians and the Ossetians. We were friends, we fought, loved and hated each other, created and destroyed families. And this lasted for many centuries until the 20th century.
But the biggest catastrophe broke out in the early 90s of the 20th century. After the collapse of the USSR, during the growth of nationalistic moods provoked by Zviad Gamsakhurdia and openly condemned by the largest and most iconic philosopher Merab Mamardashivli, a Georgian-Ossetian conflict of the 1990s broke out. This conflict shattered the peace between the two peoples for a long time, but two decades have not passed yet that a new conflict started. In 2008, there was a «Five-Day War», after which South Ossetia was granted the status of an independent state, and all relations between Russia and Georgia were terminated.
Today, Russia and Georgia are once again in the status of friendly states, and South Ossetia holds referendums to decide that South Ossetia would affiliate with the Russian Federation.
My interest in the topic of Ossetian-Georgian relations is conditioned by the love for the Georgian culture that arose thanks to the books, cinematography, painting, friendship with Georgians living in Vladikavkaz. It was always painful for me to hear when one or the other side showed hatred towards each other, but still there was more love, understanding that wars are unleashed by politicians, and common people are the ones who suffer. It is about these people that I decided to make a project and give them the floor, to hear what they think about the uneasy relations between the two peoples, how the conflict affected their lives and what they want to wish each other. The conceptual idea of the project was the fact that today about 10,000 Georgians live in Ossetia, and about 30,000 Ossetians live in Georgia, which, without superfluous words, testifies the deep ties between the two peoples. The central part of the project are the portraits of Georgians living in Ossetia and the portraits of Ossetians living in Georgia supplemented by their monologues. The project also includes archive photos from group «There Was Such a City of Stalinir» in the social network Facebook, where people from South Ossetia share pre-war family photographs with each other. One of important parts of the project is video interviews and photo portraits of South Ossetian volunteers, who defended the republic in the 90s and 2000s, as well as the landscapes of today’s Tskhinval.
